Can you run an outboard without water

That got me wondering how safe it could be for the engine, so I did some research. As it turns out, you can safely start your boat engine while out of the water as long as you have a properly connected water supply, like a garden hose attached to the water intake vent.

You can use specially designed products that are available that will fit an outboard or inboard water intake to act as if the boat was sitting in water. Starting an outboard boat engine out of the water can be done by using a tool called a Moeller Flushrite Boat Motor Flusher.

This tool is designed to look like ear muffs so that it can firmly attach itself to the inlet vents on the motor. The inlet vent is what sucks the water in to cool off the engine while it is running. While connected to a water supply such as a garden hose, the motor flusher will allow you to provide enough water so that you can start the engine on land without worrying about overheating.

However, with that said, you should still keep an eye on the temperature gauge while the engine is running and turn it off if the temperate reaches Fahrenheit. A lot of outboards come with flushing attachments already built into the motor; however, these should not be used to run your engine on land.

Thread starter tsf Start date 3 May Joined 15 Jun Messages 6. Common knowledge is of course this is a big "no-no" for risk of damaging the water system impeller when running dry. As a greenhorn I find this frustrating when wanting to test my outboard just before launching. The first time that you're really sure if your actually going fishing is after the gear case is submerged and you crank it up.

Is this impeller issue really still a factor on modern outboard engines in ? Why doesn't the impeller start up 10 secs after the engine? An engine can't overheat in 10 seconds can it? It is a simple mechanical connection. The more complexity the more likely it is to fail. You can buy muffs that attach to the leg with water supplied by a hose.

You can run an outboard for a very short time out of water, but the impeller is running dry and will shred very rapidly. Slowly I lowered it into the water That was in motor was a , it ran great for the next 10 years until I sold the boat.

Never gave me a problem Got lucky that day! Stopped the truck for fuel and checked everything over. I noticed the 9. I about burned my hand on the lower case Stunned and confused I began looking for an electrical short or something. Found nothing except that I forgot to kill the main Perko switch. Then I noticed the canvas and tape around the cowl had caused the electric start button to engage when the motor turned sharply on the transom. I wrapped it too good I guess. But as luck has it, the little 4-stroke Yamaha 9.

And it worked. I replaced the fuse, changed the oil and it is still working fine 15 years later. Just fine although it had run in a lake 12 hours earlier. I didn't feel any extra power behind the truck either. Maybe a bigger prop would've helped. Thanks for all the replies!!!! Yeah I did say 10 seconds, NOT minutes. The RPMs were at about I'd say. After the incident, it ran fine for the minutes I had it fired up.

The pisser was working!! I was just flushing out the engine. I don't think there is anything wrong, but I'm glad you guys know your stuff. Just thought I'd run it by you guys!! Thanks again!! Bob lives in central Michigan and enjoys running, woodworking, fixing up small engines, and getting out on the water with family, of course! You checked the oil in your 4-stroke outboard and are about to tear into it because the oil is milky, right?

Not so fast! While there might indeed be a costly reason as to why your oil is Are you new to boating and were told to make sure to have your outboard under water before working on it or staring it? It's a common question to wonder why exactly you need water in order to Use muffs or a trash drum filled with water to operate your outboard when your boat is on land. Continue Reading.
