Lehane does well with adding actual historical figures like J. Edgar Hoover and Babe Ruth into the story and they help him with the story threads of dissent and racism. Live By Night , from , and World Gone By , from , focus on a younger Coughlin, Joe, who not only eschewed the police life but embraced the budding world of organized crime, particularly in Florida and Cuba.
It is, though, a much more straightforward story than the twisty-turny Shutter Island. Her reports are compelling and sympathetic but her failure to protect a group of girls from rapists and killers pushes her into mental collapse.
Said collapse occurs, unfortunately, on the air. Rachel loses everything—her career, her ambitious husband, her friends—and becomes pathological about leaving her apartment. Although undiagnosed, Rachel is probably agoraphobic. Then comes Brian, a seemingly benign good guy who she met years before. He sweeps into her life and helps her work toward overcoming her fears. And they live happily ever after.
Brian is not who or what he seems, of course. Since We Fell has, reportedly, been optioned for a movie version, with Lehane himself doing the screenwriting.

I have to feel that Mr. Lehane was really feeling the stress of the yearly turnaround for a book. In fact this is the last book to be written without significant break in between. Tough book. What was most memorable about this book was how these two PIs put their lives back together after the wake of the previous novel's events. I almost wish Mr. Lehane had gone standalone here. The distance of time could have served this book better. Shouldn't this be last? You would think, given what I wrote at the top, but there are too many good elements to ignore in this book.
The fact that it didn't came together seems in retrospect only a minor disappointment. Anyway, minor Lehane is still fantastic; better than almost anybody else. My memory of this book was that it didn't quite work. The characters weren't fully formed. It was rough. The story didn't engage with me. I was left with two things. One is a scene where Patrick is chasing after a bad guy who is also black. Patrick starts to curse him, yelling the N-word. I thought it was a balls out moment, that really showed a lot of courage for a young writer.
The second thing was that at the end of the book I knew that Dennis Lehane was going to be gigantic. I had no reason to read the next book, but I knew this guy was going to pull off a great run of books. This is the book that I have had the most trouble placing.
The audacity of the book is exciting.
