The teacher advances to associate professor and then to the status of a full professor after years of teaching and the promotion voted on by members of his department.
Promotion uses variations -- involving the number of years in the classroom, quantity and quality of scholarly publications, professional ranking in the field and level of research excellence as a teacher -- to move up the professorial-title ladder. Many universities also require service to the scholarly community to advance to full professor. The title "professor" appeared as a formal prefix early in the 19th century, but few modern professors use the formal title as a written description outside academics and work that involves scholarly research or teaching.
The typical use for a modern professor includes the full name of the person followed by "Ph. Some people using the title "professor" have nothing to do with education, let alone have an earned doctorate in a scholarly field. In universities, usually we call professor someone who can supervise the research of doctorate students. Professor and medical doctor is 2 different fields. In Great Britain and Ireland and some other countries Doctor is a title earned by anyone who has followed a doctoral degree in any subject, including medicine.
A medical doctor does not necessarily have a doctoral degree PhD, DPhil etc. Other countries have different requirements for becoming a professor, though the title of Doctor is universally given to anyone with a doctoral degree.
In Germany for instance the requirements are greater for a Doctor to be awared the title of professor. However the title is awarded to Engineers and Scientists who do not work in a university, whereas in GB it is individual Unversities who grant it.
In France even a school teacher is refered to as proffesor — it merely means someone who teaches. MBBS and a PhD; these are clearly highly motivated, research minded doctors, many of whom balance their clinical work with work as a senior lecturer or even go on to become a professor themselves.
